What is FOGO
FOGO stands for Food Organics and Garden Organics. It includes waste from both food and gardening activities. Food organics include waste food, inedible food, and parts of food that are not consumed and/ or considered undesirable. Garden organics include organic wastes that arise from gardening and maintenance activities, such as lawn clippings, leaves, cuttings and branches. FOGO can also include other organic wastes that may be compatible with FOGO collections and can includes items such as paper and cardboard.
Eclipse Soils has incorporated FOGO into some existing products, which not only reduces FOGO being sent to landfill, but increases the nutrient levels available for plant uptake.
Our overall objectives are:
Divert waste from landfill – FOGO helps recover 100% of food and garden organics, diverting an average of 300kg per household per year from landfill.
Reduce methane emissions – Organics in landfill are responsible for around 18% of global methane emissions. Processing FOGO properly helps reduce this harmful greenhouse gas.
Boost recycling rates – Western Australia’s recycling rate jumped from 34% with a 2-bin system to 67% with a 3-bin system that includes FOGO.
Close the gap in processing – WA’s WARR2030 goal is to process 345,000 tonnes of FOGO per year, but currently only 135,000 tonnes are processed which leaves a shortfall of 210,000 tonnes.
Creating jobs and supporting regions – FOGO contributes to regional prosperity, with estimates showing 6 new jobs created for every 10,000 tonnes of organic material processed.
Support a circular economy – FOGO plays a key role in closing the loop, turning waste into valuable compost and moving towards a sustainable, circular economy.
Key Projects
Our key projects focus on transforming recovered FOGO material into high-quality soil and mulch products that support sustainable development across Western Australia. These products are being supplied to a range of large-scale infrastructure and commercial landscaping projects, contributing to greener urban environments and improved soil health. By partnering with local councils and industry leaders, we’re helping to close the loop on organic waste, promote circular economy principles, and deliver real environmental outcomes across the state.
